237 – News Radio vs Parks & Rec

Sitcoms are tricky business. Finding that happy medium between cute, funny, absurd and to then keep it going season after season. There are a lot losers out there. ‘News Radio’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ are the two of the winners and we’ve loaded our laugh track and are ready to go.

From the business acumen of Jimmy James to the manly wisdom of Ron Swanson. The will they or won’t they of Lisa Miller and Dave Nelson to the pure joy that is Andy Dwyer! Who would’ve thought that a half an hour of your life would have such an effect on you?

We’ve got the remote and some snacks. Why don’t you join us on the couch and let’s have a laugh!

236 – Non Collectible Card Games

So, you want to play a game, huh? We do too! We’ve never been accused of playing with a full deck and this week we’re going to prove everyone wrong. It’s the non-collectible card game show!

From poker to 52 Pick Up, we are going to go all in on this topic. It’s been a show that’s been years in the making. If you’ve ever hung out with any of us, then you won’t be surprised that we love our card games.

Put away your ‘Magic: The Gathering’ cards, because this week, we’re going for broke. What’s a frush?

236 – Lethal Weapons

We’ve all seen the “buddy cop” movies. It seems like a pretty common subgenre of the action film. However, this one may not have been the original, but it’s certainly one of the best. That’s right, this week we’re talking about ‘Lethal Weapon’.

From it’s humble beginnings in a screenplay by Shane Black, that was brought to life by Richard Donner. It’s now been rebooted in episodic format under the leadership of the one and only McG. How do they fair in a showdown? You’ll have to listen and find out.

This is the reason we do this show, kids. We’re never going to be too old for this…. stuff.

234 – Bars

Drinking. It’s something all 4 of us have done at one point or another. Some on a regular basis and some hardly at all. But one thing we all have in common, bars.

What bars did we misspend our youth in? Which bars are our favorite? What is it about drinking establishments that has caused them to play such a regular part of our lives?

This week we’re grabbing a stool, avoiding the pretzels and ordering another round. It’s the bars show! Cheers!

233 – Jumanji

Would you like to play a game? The kind that could end your life? This week, the boys are putting their own safety at risk to play, ‘Jumanji’!

We’re rolling the dice and hoping Robin Williams, along with Dwayne Johns and Jack Black can save us. Anything can happen, from killer crocs, to a barrel full of monkey’s or even cake.

Grab David Alan Grier and tell him we need his services again, because Kevin Hart is about to explode! Jumanji!

232 – Quentin Tarantino

If you were film goer in the 90’s, then you saw the landscape of cinema change. It wasn’t one single person who changed it, but one of the biggest influences was certainly Quentin Tarantino.

This week we’re celebrating the entire catalog of the most kinetic, engaging and entertaining film makers of the past couple of decades. ‘Reservoir Dogs’, ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Kill Bill’ just to name a few. If you’re a film lover like the guys from ’40 Going On 14′ are, then this is one episode you won’t want to miss.

Cast, cast, cast, cast, cast, cast, cast, cast, cast. How many podcasts is that? A lot.

Currently, we’re ’40 Going On 14′, but maybe someday we’ll be ’80 Going On 18′ and that’s why this week’s show could prove to be our future. The 4 of us have decided we’re ‘Going In Style’.

A little bit of Art Carney, mixed with some George Burns and Lee Strasberg. Add a dash of sexy Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and some Alan Arkin and you’ve got a recipe for success. Granted, we’ve done heist films before, but never quite like this.

How do they hold up against one another? You’ll have to have a plan, if you want to pull this one off or Christopher Lloyd.

229 – Fargos

Anybody want to go to Fargo, eh? ’40 Going On 14′ does and we’re going to bring William H. Macy and Martin Freeman with us!

The Coen Brothers crime driven comedy stole all of the box office numbers and awards in 1996. In 2014 to now, the television version has seemed to be doing the same. It’s just proof that a good story and characterizations can surpass time and mediums.

If you like your storytelling darkly comedic, then this is going to be a show you don’t want to miss. Not too mention, who doesn’t love talking in that accent!

228 – Party Foods

We’re throwing a party! Not really. Actually, we’re going to take a chance double dipping our chip while we talk about party foods!

Get out your crock pot and the brick of Velveeta cheese, it’s time to enjoy some party food! I was going to say hors d’oeuvre’s, but it always looks like I spelled it wrong.

227 – Galaxy Quest vs The Orville

Space. The final Frontier. To boldy go where no podcast has gone before. This week, it’s not ‘Star Trek’, but it might just be better.

Warm up the warp drives, because “By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!”

224 – Blade Runners

Have you ever wondered if the person next to you is a replicant? Have you ever asked them a series of questions, in the hopes of figuring it out? If either of those things are true, then you should really listen to this weeks show.

Two landmark films for awkward high schoolers everywhere. Featuring the talents of Christan Slater, Winona Ryder, Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams just to name a few. We’re going to see how they hold up after being gone from the hallowed halls of high school for so long.

Get your ‘Burn Book’s ready, because things are about to get juvenile.

220 – Christmas Stories

Whenever the Christmas holidays roll around, one film almost always comes to mind. One that reminds us about the gift of giving, the joy of being a kid on Christmas morning and pleasures of winning a major award.

That’s right, the merry gentlemen of ’40 Going On 14′ are heading to Indiana again, but this time it’s to talk about ‘A Christmas Story’! However, we’re also going to talk about its second cousin, twice removed, ‘A Christmas Story 2’.

It you’re looking for some Daniel Stern, to add to your holiday cheer, we’ve got it. Turn off ‘Little Orphan Annie’ and tune into us, because Christmas only comes once a year!

219 – Julianne Moore

When trying to think of a modern day actress that’s had a career that’s spanned genres and who’s mastered them all, one name in particular comes to mind: Julianne Moore.

This week, ’40 Going On 14′ is celebrating her entire catalog! She’s worked with just about everyone in the business and established herself as a talent you can count on. We felt it was time to give her the spotlight for an episode.

If you’re a fan already or even if you’re not, this is the show for you. Why do I say that? Because we all need a little Moore in our lives.

218 – The Saints

What do Val Kilmer, Roger Moore and Adam Rayner have in common? They’ve all played Simon Templar aka ‘The Saint’! On this week’s very special episode, we’re going to focus on the 1997 feature film and the 2017 made for TV movie.
